Toilets may be a good place to get people to think and ponder. In every toilet of an organisation who is my client there is a notice “Gentlemen will lift the seat”. Very interesting, since it clearly tells you whether or not you are a gentleman and what you should do to qualify.
How deeply we hold assumptions! What will I be if I actually “sit during the
performance?” Being a man, it is some how not expected of me! Because
another toilet notice in a hotel clearly says, “Gentlemen will please left the
seat etc. etc. and gentle women will please remain seated etc. etc.” in at
attempt at helping the conformance to procedure through humour.
I am left wondering how deeply do we convert assumptions into certainties?
And how much of the stereotyping we do is baseless!
