When a new coffee shop was opened in town, I had gone there with a couple of
friends to see if the coffee was any good. It was and we soon became regular
visitors to the place. About a month after the launch, the management decided to
change the menu, and the waiter proudly brought us the new menus one
evening. Everything looked good, and I particularly liked the sound of one of the
new sandwiches. And so, when the waiter came to take our orders, I asked if the
sandwich was available. Yes, it was, he said. But just as I was going to order the
sandwich, he quickly added "But you can order it o nly tomorrow." "Hold on," I
said. "You say the sandwich is available but I can't eat it today?" Then the waiter
explained: "The sandwich is actually made -- you can see it in the food counter.
But because our system has not been updated with the new menu, we can't bill it.
So, come back tomorrow and try it."
We might have computers and automation in every field, but without some human
responsibility and initiative, there's not much point having the latest systems in
place, is there?
